| THE NELSON HOUSE North Carolina’s third oldest town, Beaufort, remains a have n for 18th-century architecture. The Nelson House, a proud example of the more than 125 historic homes and sites preserved in this colonial seaport, bears the name of its 19th-century owner John Hancock Nelson, who was a descendant of one of the settlers in the area. Built about 1790 by local builder John Davis, the house displays the West Indies influence seen on many seaside homes of that period. The broad, double gallery spanning the front not only added cool, outdoor living space but also provided a convenient observation post for families to watch for and communicate with passing ships. Restored to its original form. The Nelson House is privately owned and is not open to the public. However, the Beaufort Historical Association invites visitors to tour other restored homes in the city. |
