| George Reid House Built in the late 1700s, this unusual house was the home of George Reid, a merchant who operated a store near the Capitol. Records show that Reid served in the militia in 1775 and furnished guns to the American army in 1776. Little else is known about him. The George Reid House has an unusual placement of chimneys: one interior and one exterior. Architectural historians, who began restoration of the house in 1930, surmise that the chimneys, and resulting asymmetrical arrangement of windows and dormers, arose from the builder s desire to add width to the central hall, an important means of cooling the house in summer. The William E. Poole house design faithfully replicates this interesting eccentricity. |
